Dr. Russell Akin
Dr. Russell Akin is a board certified dermatologist by the American Board of Dermatology and fellowship trained in Mohs surgery. He is originally from Plainview, Texas and is a fourth generation West Texan. His West Texas roots run deep through this part of the state. He attended Texas Tech Health Sciences Center in Lubbock Texas for Medical school and completed residency training in Lubbock Texas in the Texas Tech Department of Dermatology. While in residency he developed an interest in skin cancer and skin cancer patients and was accepted and completed a Mohs surgery and Procedural Dermatology fellowship at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania. During the fellowship year Dr. Akin performed Mohs surgery and advanced reconstruction. After completion of the fellowship Dr. Akin moved to Midland and started the first Mohs surgery practice in the Permian Basin.
In 2016, Dr. Akin returned to Lubbock and accepted the position of Director of Mohs surgery at Texas Tech Health Sciences Center Department of Dermatology, where he was in charge of resident surgical education in the department. He was responsible for setting up immunostains in the department for utilization in Mohs sugery and advancing Mohs surgery in the department. In 2017, in conjunction with the Department of Dermatology, he started the Mohs surgery and Cutaneous Oncology fellowship program. The fellowship program is the fifth ACGME program in a five-state radius.
Dr. Akin returns to Midland with the goal of continuing to provide dermatology and Mohs surgery care to the citizens of West Texas. He is passionate about providing exceptional patient care in a patient center environment. We welcome you to our practice and look forward to being a partner in your skin cancer care. Dr. Akin has 3 children and has been married to his wife Jill for over 20 years. He is a life-long Red Raider and a third-generation graduate!
